MANILA, Philippines — Cloudy skies, rains, and thunderstorms will continue to prevail in some parts of the country on Sunday due to the shear line, northeast monsoon or “amihan” and the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

In the 4 a.m. weather forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, weather specialist Obet Badrina said most parts of Luzon will experience cloudy skies and rains brought by the northeast monsoon and shear line.

“Malaki yung tyansa ng maulap na kalangitan at mahihinang pag-ulan partikular na sa may Cagayan Valley region at gayundin sa may area ng Cordillera dulot ng hanging amihan na posibleng makaranas po tayo ng mahina hanggang katamtamang pag-ulan,” Badrina said.

(There is a big chance for cloudy skies and light rains to prevail, particularly in the Cagayan Valley region, Cordillera [Administrative Region] due to the northeast monsoon, where light to moderate rains are likely.)

“Sa nalalabing bahagi ng Luzon, particular sa Ilocos region at kanlurang bahagi ng Central Luzon, inaasahan naman natin ang generally fair weather pero posible pa ring magkaroon ng maulap na kalangitan at isolated o pulo-pulong mahihinang pag-ulan dulot pa rin ng hanging amihan,” Badrina added.

(For the rest of Luzon, particularly in the Ilocos region and the western part of Central Luzon, we expect generally fair weather but there is a possibility of cloudy skies and isolated light rains due to the northeast monsoon.)

The weather specialist warned that shear line, or the convergence of warm and cold winds, may cause moderate to heavy rains with possible flooding and landslides, particularly in parts of Quezon province and the Bicol region.

“Magiging maulap ang kalangitan at malaki ang tyansa ng pag-ulan sa may bahagi naman ng Calabarzon [Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon] kasama yung bahagi ng Aurora at ilang bahagi ng Bicol region, kasama na yung Kamaynilaan dahil sa pag-iral ng shear line,” he noted.

(Parts of Calabarzon, Aurora, the Bicol region, and Metro Manila will experience cloudy skies and huge chances of rain due to the shear line.)

In a commentary, Japanese investment bank Nomura said the Philippines and India are the least exposed to China growth—which can get a boost from Chinese authorities’ recent policy blitz—due to the two nations’ “weak trade and investment linkages” with Beijing.

Meanwhile, parts of Palawan, the eastern section of Visayas, and the rest of Mindanao will experience cloudy skies and rains due to the ITCZ, or the merging of winds from the northern and southern hemispheres.

“Magiging maulap din ang kalangitan na may tyansa ng pag ulan lalo na sa Caraga region [Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norteiwildcasino, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Province], lalo na sa may Dinagat Islands at Surigao del Norte, lalo na sa bahagi ng Zamboanga del Norte, makakaranas din ng maulap na kalangitan na may tyansa ng pag-ulan dulot ng ITCZ,” he added.

(ITCZ will bring cloudy skies with chances of rain in the Caraga region, particularly in Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and parts of Zamboanga del Norte.)
