Customers of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) will get a sigh of relief as the power distributor announced lower electricity rates for January.
After two consecutive months of rate increases, the company said the overall rate would dip by P0.2189 per kilowatt hour (kWh) to P11.7428 from the previous month’s P11.9617 per kWh.

The decrease was attributed to cheaper generation costs that fell by P0.1313 per kWh to P6.8358 per kWh.
Article continues after this advertisementThe generation charge, which usually accounts for at least half of power bills, covers the cost of power purchased from independent power producers, the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market, and power supply agreements.
